The objective of this project is to revitalize rural villages in China by improving quality of life through the environment, communication, local business, public and domestic infrastructure. By creating links to an urban and rural network of social and economic exchange, communities are supported to foster everyday sustainability.
In China, the concept of environmental sustainability was initiated in Chongming Island, a district of Shanghai. Because of ecological efforts and ongoing research on the island, the identity of Chongming is fully focused on the environment, with residents who already understand the importance of sustainable living and their potential for providing the mainland with a model for a healthy, ecological and profitable quality of life.
The local government of the island has asserted a leading position by designating five villages as Chinese sustainable models. The Xian Qiao village is one of the five villages selected and is given as the site for this project. according to what the government has deemed suitable. Residents of Xian Qiao have a heightened awareness of their importance and have already begun installing solar-powered street lights and water treatment systems. What is most lacking in the village however, is the cultural and social elements that foster a community and identity to outsiders. Complementary to technical “green” solutions, the focus of the project is the social sustainability and distinctiveness of the local area in particular.
Partners involved in the project are first the residents and their existing resources, the local government, academic professors and exchange students, professionals based in practice, non-government organizations, grant foundations and business sponsors. These partners are divided into the categories of Project Content Resources, Project Endorsement and Project Funding.
